Song No. 42 — Eu Quero um Samba | Haroldo Barbosa & Janet de Almeida (1945)

Various - Vamos Dançar Vol 1 (1956) a

The jazz-tinged Eu Quero um Samba was introduced in 1945 by Os Namorados da Lua as B-side to Morena Faceira.

Os Namorados da Lua was founded in 1941 by Lúcio Alves (who was only 14 at that time) and lasted six years with three formations. The one that recorded Eu Quero um Samba consisted of Lúcio Alves, Nei Costa, José Ferreira Soares aka Russinho, Joãozinho, Francisco Storino aka Chiquinho, Rui Peres and Horaci Medela. The following year, the group also included Arnaldo Humberto de Medeiros aka Nanai and Milton Santos de Almeida aka Miltinho who both later joined Anjos do Inferno before becoming solo artists just like Lúcio Alves himself.

Haroldo BarbosaEu Quero um Samba was the group’s most successful song but even though it was also one of Brazil’s biggest hits in 1945, the song was not picked up until 1953. Then, former members of Os Modernistas and Os Namorados da Lua formed Os Namorados, including João Donato on accordion, and Nanai and Miltinho on vocals. Their rendition of Eu Quero um Samba with Donato’s arrangement and accordion play is notable since it anticipated what was later to be known as the bossa nova beat.

Two members of the previous groups re-recorded Eu Quero um Samba on solo albums: Miltinho issued a show-stopping rendition on his self-titled album in 1961, arranged and conducted by Nelsinho, and Nanai included the song on Noite de Samba no Nanai, recorded live in 1965 at his own Bar Nanai in Rio de Janeiro.

Another remarkable version of Eu Quero um Samba is João Gilberto’s minimalistic and sensitive interpretation on his highly acclaimed self-titled album of 1973, also known as his “white album”.

EU QUERO UM SAMBA

Eu quero um samba feito só pra mim • Espalhar, espalhar, espalhar • Eu quero a melodia feita assim • Quero sambar, quero sambar • Quero sambar porque no samba eu sei que vou • Me acabar, me virar, me espalhar • A noite inteira até o sol raiar

Ah! Quando o samba acaba • Eu fico triste então • Vai melancolia • Eu quero alegria • Dentro do meu coração

  1. Very good stuff! I had read that Donato’s accordion playing may have been the “inspiration” for Joao Gilberto’s syncopated guitar style. Thanks for providing an example of that. Great tune by the way, and that guy Miltinho could really sing! What a fantastic voice. I never knew him but I miss him already.

  2. Dear Andreas!
What a nice music!!! I can’t stop listening again and again!
Totally beautiful blend of samba and boogie-woogie (or even early rock’n’roll) from 1945!
I always like fresh version of Conjunto Arpoador (Raul Mascarenhas (piano), Rildo Hora (guitar, harm.), Reizinho (dr), Jorge Marinho (bass) and Côro de Joab) and version of Nanai, but the best of all are Os Namorados da Lua. They’re swinging like mad and the impression is, that they’re absolutely free in their singing!!!
    Bossanov
P.S. Happy Brazilians!!! I can’t imagine Europeans, singing so happy in 1945!
