Song No. 118 — Molambo | Jaime Florence ‘Meira’ & Augusto Mesquita (1953)

Molambo was introduced in 1953 by Maria Júlia da Silva, artistically known as Julinha Silva. Recorded in June and released in September, Molambo was her debut record in a career which spanned only seven singles until 1962.

The song is probably best known in the version by Roberto Luna from 1955 with backing vocals by Titulares do Ritmo and orchestral arrangement by Luis Arruda Paes. However, the commercially most successful rendition at the time was the one by Cauby Peixoto which reached number 26 of the year-end charts of 1956.

Certainly the best known composition of Mesquita and Meira (who also was Baden Powell’s first guitar teacher), Molambo was recorded about 140 times to date.

MOLAMBO
