Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te) was introduced in January of 1965 as finalist at the 15th annual Festival di Sanremo. Since according to the rules at that time, each composition had to be performed in two differently arranged versions by an Italian as well as an international artist, the song was performed by the composer Pino Donaggio himself and by American country music singer Jody Miller. In March, Donaggio’s original reached number one in Italy and finished at number 13 of the year-end charts.
Although Se Piangi, Se Ridi, written by Mogol, Gianni Marchetti and Bobby Solo, became the winner of Sanremo that year, Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te) was the entry that became internationally famous due to the version by the ”Queen of Mods”, Dusty Springfield. Taking part in the contest herself with Tu Che Ne Sai and Di Fronte All’ Amore, Springfield was present during Donaggio’s performance of Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te) and was moved to tears as she later stated. A year later she had recorded an instrumental track , however, lacking English lyrics which were then written by Vicky Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell, titled You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. Legend has it that Springfield recorded 47 takes, while moving from the recording booth to a stairwell to produce the preferred accoustics until she finally was satisfied with the result. Actually, this is very possible as she also, for example, distorted studio recordings in favour of an altered sound. Released in March 1966, Springfield’s recording became an instant classic and triggered the song’s worldwide success with countless versions to come. Interestingly, however, her rendition does not appear to have been issued in Brazil.
There, Italian songs were popular throughout the fifties and sixties, and Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te) was no exception. Donaggio’s original version also went to the top spot in Brazil and finished the year-end charts even higher than in Italy at number six. At least seven more versions were released in 1965 alone, followed by ten more in 1966 after the international success of Springfield’s rendition.
While Rosemary used adapted lyrics by Hélio Justo, most subsequent recordings used lyrics by J. K. Filho, including the ones by Agnaldo Timóteo and Wanderley Cardoso.
