Song No. 68 — Só Por Amor | Baden Powell & Vinícius de Moraes (1963)

Vinícius de Moraes & Odette Lara - Vinícius & Odette Lara (1963)

Só Por Amor was introduced in 1963 by Odette Lara on the album Vinícius & Odette Lara, arranged and conducted by Moacir Santos. The album was the result of Lara and Moraes being featured guests in the stage show “Skindô” earlier that year. Lara’s seven performances on Vinícius & Odette Lara established her as a sensitive singer apart from being a star of the big screen as well as television.

Vinícius de Moraes & Odette LaraFeaturing all original songs by Moraes and Powell, Vinícius & Odette Lara was the first collaboration of the two composers presenting instant classics such as Berimbau and Samba em Préludio. Besides, it was the first album Aloysio de Oliveira produced and issued on his newly founded label Elenco.

Although less recorded at its time than other compositions by Moraes and Powell, Só Por Amor was performed excellently without exception be it with vocal versions as of Mário Telles, Lygia de Freitas and Geraldo Vandré or instrumentals such as by Édison Machado`s star-cast rendition, arranged by Paulo Moura and including Tenório Jr., Ed Maciel, J.T Meirelles and Raul de Souza.

Powell recorded Só Por Amor in 1968 with vocals by Márcia and backing by Os Originais do Samba in a live recording at the Teatro Bela Vista in São Paulo. Interestingly, Moraes has apparently not recorded the song himself.
