Song No. 201 — O Que Eu Gosto de Você | Sylvio Cézar (1962)

O Que Eu Gosto de Você was introduced in December 1962 by Sylvio Rodrigues Silva, better known as Sylvio Cézar (or Silvio César), as the B-side of the single Preciso Dar um Jeito. Arranged by Ed Lincoln, O Que Eu Gosto de Você also appeared on Cezar’s 1963 debut album Amor Demais.

Although it was only released as a B-side by Cézar himself and also by Pery Ribeiro, O Que Eu Gosto de Você quickly became one of the most popular songs by Cézar.

Dóris Monteiro’s recording, under the artistic direction of Armando Pittigliani, was accompanied by Walter Wanderley, whose own recording, like Pery Ribeiro’s, was arranged by Lyrio Panicali.

The identity of the other two musicians in the trio is not revealed on the cover of Bossa G, the only album by pianist José Geraldo. However, there is a rumour that Kenny Burrell’s guitar can be heard on at least some of the tracks.

One-day Wonders — Pt. 1

Some songs have been recorded umpteen times, and sometimes it is difficult to find out how many versions actually exist. At the other end of the spectrum, many a treasure is hidden that, despite its often well-known composers, lyricists and performers, has only been recorded once. They deserve just as much not to be unheard—so let’s clear the stage for these one-day wonders!

Song No. 158 — Tristeza de Nós Dois | Durval Ferreira, Maurício Einhorn & Bebeto Castilho (1960)

Tristeza de Nós Dois was introduced in late 1960 by Conjunto da U.R.S.A. on Nova Geração em Ritmo de Samba, an album produced by Altamiro Carrilho with arrangements by the then 17 year old Eumir Deodato. The album also introduced Sambop by Claudette Soares.

Since Tristeza de Nós Dois is the sole recording of Conjunto da U. R. S. A. and the only instrumental on Nova Geração em Ritmo de Samba, it seems reasonable to assume that the members are the same musicians who accompany all songs on the album: Altamiro Carrilho on flute, Eumir Deodato on piano, Durval Ferreira on guitar, Agobar de Paula on bombardino, Alfredinho on bass and Fernando Costa on drums. The abbreviation U.R.S.A. is a spoof of URSS, in English known as USSR, and stands for “União Reabilitadora do Samba de Asfalto” meaning Asphalt Samba Rehabilitation Union.

In 1961, Rosana Toledo was the first to pick up the song. Her version was first released as A-side to Levanta-me Meu Amor by Nelson Gonçalves before being included on her subsequent second career album Sorriso e Lágrima. The arrangement by Nelsinho was reutilised for tenor saxophonist Aurino Ferreira de Oliveira on his 1963 album Na Cadência do Samba.

The third version was recorded by Pedrinho Rodrigues as featured guest singer on Ed Lincoln’s album Ed Lincoln – Seu Piano e Seu Órgão Espetacular, and later included on Rodrigues solo debut album Tem Que Balançar.

The composers Durval Ferreira, Maurício Einhorn and Bebeto Castilho re-recorded Tristeza de Nós Dois several times: Ferreira and Einhorn as musicians of Os Gatos and on Tom Jobim Apresenta by Lindolpho Gaya and Eumir Deodato, Bebeto Castilho as part of Tamba Trio, Tamba 4 and as a soloist.

Original arranger Eumir Deodato re-recorded the song arranging the 1964 version by Wanda Sá and the 1966 version on Tom Jobim Apresenta as well as playing piano as part of Os Gatos.

Although the song was only a minor hit in its day, released on 7-inch only by Rosana Tolédo and Pedrinho Rodrigues, it enjoyed some highly notable versions and gained a lasting popularity with about 60 recordings until today.

Song No. 109 — Nem um Talvez | Umberto Silva & Terezinha Curtis (1968)

Nem um Talvez was introduced in 1968 by Trio Ternura on their sef-titled debut album. The trio was formed by Jurema, Robson and Jussara Lourenço da Silva, children of composer Umberto Silva, around 1966 and disbanded in the late 70s.

The appealing song was picked up only once when Dóris Monteiro recorded her short yet sophisticated version in 1969, arranged by Lyrio Panicali.

1. Trio Ternura from the album Trio Ternura (1968, Musidisc Hi-Fi 2168)

2. Dóris Monteiro from the album Mudando de Conversa (1969, Odeon MOFB 3575)

Song No. 103 — E Nada Mais | Durval Ferreira & Luis Fernando Freire (1966)

Os Gatos - Aquele com dos Gatos (1966)

E Nada Mais was introduced in 1966 by Os Gatos on their second and final album Aquêle Som dos Gatos. After their self-titled debut two years earlier, the personnel changed slightly on this one with Durval Ferreira and Daudeth Azevedo aka Neco on guitar, J.T. Meirelles and Copinha on flute, Paulo Moura on alto sax, Ed Maciel and Norato on trombone and Wilson das Neves on drums, Aquêle Som dos Gatos was arranged by Eumir Deodato and spiced with vocals lead by Durval Ferreira and Beth Carvalho.

The jolly ditty enjoyed about fourteen recordings in its day including two by João Peixoto Primo who recorded the song twice in Mexico with his quintet, first in 1967  and the next year backing Pery Ribeiro with the very same arrangement by Breno Sauer.

Song No. 71 — Palhaçada | Luis Reis & Haroldo Barbosa (1961)

Dóris Monteiro - Doris Monteiro (1961) a

Palhaçada, also known as Cara de Palhaço, was introduced in 1961 on at least nine singles and twelve albums. Which of the recordings was the very first is unknown, as only the dates of release are traceable, if at all. The first to be released were the recordings of Dóris Monteiro, Walter Wanderley, Isaura Garcia and Ivon Curi in March, followed by Miltinho, Joab Teixeira and Heraldo do Monte in April.

Haroldo BarbosaPalhaçada was the undisputed hit of 1961 and is also a prime example of sambalanço, a blend of samba and bossa nova that was immensely popular for some time in the early sixties. Although Palhaçada also became a hit for Miltinho and one of his signature songs, Dóris Monteiro’s rendition, arranged and conducted by Carlos Monteiro de Souza, was by far the most successful and finished 1961 as the number one song of the year. In 1970, both singers re-recorded the song as part of a medley on the first of their four duet albums.

Fafá Lemos’s album Dó-Ré-Mi-Fafá Lemos, which also reused Nelsinhos’s arrangement for Miltinho’s Murmúrio, by Djalma Ferreira and Luiz Antônio also included a version of Palhaçada with an earlier arrangement, the one for Ivon Curi.

Luiz Reis and Haroldo Barbosa recorded Palhaçada in 1962 on Reis’s album Samba de Balanço, produced by Haroldo Barbosa.

Song No. 58 — Muito à Vontade | João Donato & João Mello (1964)

João Donato - Muito à Vontade (1963) a

Muito à Vontade was introduced in early 1964 by João Donato de Oliveira Neto on the album of the same name, featuring himself on piano, Tião Neto on bass, Milton Banana on drums and Amaury Rodriquez on percussion. Like most of the songs on that album, Muito à Vontade was composed in the studio during the recording session which took only two days in late 1963.

João DonatoMuito à Vontade was recorded after Donato’s return to Brazil from a four year stint in the US where he played with Cal Tjader and Mongo Santamaria. It was only his second solo album after Chá Dançante in 1956, a rather surprising fact given Donato’s reputation as an accomplished musician and arranger in the subsequent years. However, Muito à Vontade and the ensuing A Bossa Muito Moderna paved Donato’s way for his international career and works with Bud Shank, Nelson Riddle and Claus Ogerman.

The song Muito à Vontade was recorded about nine times until 1972. Eumir Deodato picked it up first, together with his Catedráticos on the album Impulso! followed by trombonist Raul de Souza who recorded an exquisite rendition in 1965 with Sambalanço Trio on his debut album À Vontade Mesmo.

Originally an instrumental piece, João Mello later provided some lyrics. Dóris Monteiro recorded the only vocal version of Muito à Vontade at the time on one of her finest albums, Simplesmente.

Song No. 53 — Volta Por Cima | Paulo Vanzolini (1962)

Noite Ilustrada - Noite Ilustrada (1963) a

Volta Por Cima was introduced in October 1962 by Noite Ilustrada on his single Volta Por Cima b/w Lua Triste which was reissued in February 1963 with Sim Ou Não on the flipside. The samba became an instant success, reaching number 3 of the year-end charts of 1963.

Paulo VanzoliniOriginally offered to several singers who refused to record the song, Volta por Cima was picked up by Mário de Souza Marques Filho aka Noite Ilustrada during his series of appearances at the bar Moleque in São Paulo where regular guests used to do the backing vocals while he was performing the song. This gushing enthusiasm lead producer Alfredo Borba to record Volta por Cima with Noite Ilustrada. The arrangement was provided by Portinho who also issued his own version on single the following year.

Other notable vocal versions were recorded by Oswaldo Nunes, Mauricy Moura, Roberto Silva and Dóris Monteiro, the latter accompanied by Walter Wanderley.

Preface_Item_AltaFelididade_2nd_short

In 1954, just months before he first met his long-term partner Vinícius de Moraes, composer Antônio Carlos Jobim joined forces with lyricist Billy Blanco to write the Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro, praising the charms of Rio with voices and chorus, and subtitled A Montanha – o Sol – o Mar (Sinfonia Popular em Tempo de Samba). The overture is followed by Hino ao Sol – Coisas do Dia – Matei-me no Trabalho – Zona Sul – Arpoador – Noites do Rio – O Mar – A Montanha – O Morro – Descendo o Morro – O Samba de Amanhã. It might not be Jobim’s most sophisticated work but it’s noteworthy as his first orchestral effort.

Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro was first recorded in 1954 with Elizeth Cardoso, Lúcio Alves, Gilberto Milfont, Emilinha Borba, Dick Farney, Dóris Monteiro, Nora Ney, Jorge Goulart and Os Cariocas, arranged and conducted by Radamés Gnattali.

In 1960, Maestro Gnattali was once more in charge when the Sinfonia was recorded with a new line-up of singers teaming Maysa, Ted Moreno, Jamelão, Risadinha, Albertinho Fortuna, Luely Figueiró, Nelly Martins, Os Cariocas and Coral de Severino Filho.

In 1962, the Sinfonia was the soundtrack for Esse Rio Que Eu Amo, a movie by Carlos Hugo Christensen. This recording featured Lana Bittencourt, Haroldo de Almeida and yet again Os Cariocas, backed by orchestra and chorus arranged and directed by Lyrio Panicali.

Various Artists — Esse Rio que Eu Amo (a)    Various Artists — Esse Rio que Eu Amo (b)

Despite being an interesting work, almost none of the compositions gained lasting success. Apart from a shortened piano version of the Sinfonia recorded by Bené Nunes on his 1965 album Teclado Fantástico, only Descendo o Morro prevailed as a single piece with several versions, including some great renditions by Jorge Goulart and Dorinha Freitas.

Both studio albums as well as the soundtrack album presented different songs compiled on their B-sides. The 1954 album featured songs from Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro performed by the quintet of Radamés Gnattali on piano, Chiquinho do Acordeon under his alias Romeu Seibel on accordion, Zé Menezes on guitar, Vidal on bass and Luciano Perrone on drums. The 1960 album featured songs penned by other composers including a delightful version of Copacabana by Maysa and Coral de Severino Filho. The 1962 soundtrack album presented a selection of contemporary sambas like Você Passou and Levanta Mangueira, including uncredited performances by Cyro Monteiro, Roberto Carlos and Mara Silva.

Izio Gross (*1943) is a classically trained pianist, arranger and band leader who seems to be almost unknown outside Brazil, though unjustifiedly. He worked with a number of renowned artists such as Paulo Moura, Zé Bodega, Sylvia Telles, João Gilberto, Bolão, Agostinho dos Santos, Raul de Souza and Cipó. In the early sixties he recorded two impressive albums with highly sophisticated arrangements and brilliant line-ups of musicians such as Édison Machado.

Sometimes music acts release just one album and are never heard of again afterwards. That’s what inexplicably happened to Trio Samba even though their 1964 album Samba! Samba! Samba! is pure delight.
